There are numerous caves, pits, hollows and depressions in karst. The system of caves, which represents huge, still unexplored treasure of the Pešter plateau, has not still been adequately presented to tourists, but is well known to speleologists. This plateau got its name after caves for Pešter, the original meaning of the term means”the cave”. The caves of Pešter are unusual, long and mysterious; abound in stalactites, stalagmites and other forms of decoration which have been deposited in caves’ galleries and hallways of weeping waters for centuries.
Ušac cave system
This cave system, one of the largest in our country, consists of several speleological caves intersected by channels, 6 185 meters long. The Ušac cave is the largest part of this system. It has two entrances, the first in the village of Gornje Lopiže, and the second in the riverbed of the Uvac River. It is considered to be the longest cave in Serbia with the length of more than six kilometers. The Ice cave (Ledena pećina) is slightly shorter than the Usac cave. Its main channel extends parallel to the main channel of the Ušac cave, at the distance of about a hundred meters. The Bezdan pit is the smallest, but the most interesting part of the Ušac cave system. The entrance into this pit is located at the end of the dry valley called Miletin Do. The Tubić cave is located in the village of Tubići, five kilometers northwest to Sjenica, it has two entrances and occasionally is hydrological active. The Baždar cave is located in the village of Ursule, about ten kilometers northwest to Sjenica.
The Đalović cave
Below the Pešter plateau, almost in all its length, extends the Djalović cave as well – the longest cave of the Balkan Peninsula. Known as the Cave above the devil’s gulfs of the plateau, this cave has hallways, labyrinths, chambers and halls in the length of tens of kilometers. The cave is entered from the Djalović gorge, 25 kilometers north to Bijelo Polje, passing through its chambers, long labyrinths and corridors, which are located below the Pešter plateau. Up to 11750 meters of this cave have been explored so far, which can be divided into four parts: a Channel with lakes, huge labyrinth, Long channel and the passages which connect the upper and lower parts. The cave is still unavailable for tourists, so only researchers have the access for now.
