Quotation

As we pass along we expatiate upon the unjust poverty in this sea of beauty. For the Pešter plateau is thousand meters above the sea level so the meadows are everywhere and only several fields are sown with buckwheat. The meadows have various blades of grass, most medicinal nightshades, so the meat from Pešter, weather sheep or beef, is highly valued and of a special taste, while Sjenica cheese is of the most famous. It is the local "brand".

Rivers

At first glance, the rivers of Pešter resemble snakes: they are thin, fast, winding, and once a year they put off the ice just like a snake puts off its shirt. However, below the surface they hide the entire wealth of fish and underwater world; that’s why Pešter is a favorite fishing destination for decades. The Pešter rivers meanders, increases, merges one into another and finally form a large lake in the Uvac canyon. Some of those, such as Borovštica, Tuzinjska or Brnjička, represent the best known underwater streams in our country.

The Uvac River
The Uvac river, as the largest tributary of the Lim River, originates in the area of Sjenica municipality, in place called Caričina, close to mountain Ozren. It is extremely mountainous river of the high energetic potential; that’s why three hydroelectric power stations have been constructed on its flow creating three artificial lakes: the Sjenica, the Zlatar and the Radoinja lakes. The Uvac has one of the most beautiful canyons in Europe, with famous meanders, whose height sometimes reaches 100 meters. The photo of these meanders, as one of the natural beauties of our countries, decorates lots of touristic folders and catalogues. The most beautiful part of these meanders is located in the area of Sjenica municipality, so the local people sometimes jokingly say: "What the canyon of Colorado means for the USA, the Uvac canyon means for Serbia".

The Vapa River
The Vapa is the favorite river of our fishermen. It originates in the altitude of 1040 meters, arises from the whole combination of rivulets and streams, but the main waters derive from the strong springs. The one on its source, in the village of Gradac, is the most important. One kilometer along, the Vapa receives the Štavalj River, and in the middle of the flow it receives Jablanica and Grabovica rivers. It empties into the Uvac forming a large lake in the Uvac canyon. The Vapa flows through so-called lower part of the Pešter plateau and it meanders a lot. The citizens of ex-Yugoslavia were familiar with meanders of the Vapa, in the plain of Pešter, through the textbooks of geography, which assigned that phenomenon as one of the most interesting beauties in our former country. The Vapa is 18 kilometers long.

The Grabovica and Jablanica rivers
These two rivers are strong, torrential rivers that flow through the urban part of the Municipality of Sjenica. These are the tributaries of the Vapa River which empty into it near the village of Gornja Vapa. The Grabovica and Jablanica rivers are rich in Salmoninae (trout family) and Coregoninae families.

The Kladnička river
Kladnička river arises from the Studena and Radevska rivers which come together near the village of Kladnica at an altitude of 1100 meters.

The Veljušnica river is a left tributary of the Uvac which springs up below the Golo Brdo hill at an altitude of about 1200 meters and empties into the Sjenica Lake below the village of Derventa. In its upper part, this river is a discrete area of the Sjenica and Prijepolje municipalities, and in its middle and lower course it separates the municipalities of Sjenica and Nova Varos. Total length of this river, from the spring to the mouth is 19 kilometers.

The Brnjička river
springs below Golija Mountain and after the placid flow through the Pešter fields it submerges in a karstic valley. After a few kilometers it occurs as a torrential spring of the Vapa in the village of Gradac.

Clear and cold, at the same time mountainous and peaceful, the rivers of Pešter represent one of the true beauties of this wonderful plateau. Fishing in the shade of a willow, or swimming in their clear and cold water is an experience of a lifetime. They meander and twist left-right even at the places without natural barrier for their flow, so the viewer sometimes has the impression that they are going backward and recapture the space they have already left behind. These rivulets, causelessly twisting left-right at a glance, represent the phenomenon that will not be a matter of indifference to any connoisseur of natural beauties.
