Griffon Vultureis a species of vulture eagle, of an impressive size and a wingspan of up to 3 meters. The average weight of a bird ranges between 8 and 9 kilograms, and some species can reach a weight of 11 kilograms. Towards the end of January and at the beginning of February, the female lays one egg and both parents incubate it for eight weeks. Griffon vulture nests and lays eggs on the most unapproachable places possible, on the top of limestone rocks which cliffs dominate the water of the Uvac Lake. Hatchet eaglet stays in the nest for nearly four months before their first flight. Vultures become sexually mature after 4 to 5 years. The role of griffon vulture in the food chain in ecosystem is unique and irreplaceable – dead animals are its strict diet, thereby preventing the spreading of diseases enabling "natural recycling".
Some twenty years ago this rare species was threatened by extinction. Nineteen years ago, in the territory of Uvac lakes there were only 7 individuals of griffon vulture. In 1994, "Griffon Vulture" - Foundation for protection of birds of prey was founded, and opened the feeding station and since then, the carrion has been taken there continuously. As a result, nowadays there are about 300 individuals of griffon vultures in the Uvac canyon. That’s how the colony of this unique bird species has become the largest in the Balkans and one of the largest in Europe.
