Municipality of Sjenica has the population of 34.000, 12 local communities and 103 settlements. Sjenica is situated in a gentle valley, in the heart of the Pešter plateau, surrounded by mountains.
Pešter is the largest plateau on the Balkan Peninsula, and one of the largest in the Balkans. With an altitude of 1150 meters and an area of 63 square kilometers, it represents the unique, splendid and unmatched natural oasis in the heart of Europe.
Due to the high snow and low temperatures, Pešter is also known as the Serbian Siberia. Doe to its altitude and large number of its cultural and historical monuments, some publications named it as the Serbian Tibet. In 1954, the temperature reached minus 38.3 degrees Celsius, which was the lowest temperature ever since it has been measured in Serbia.

There are persons who do not know their father, there are even those who do not know their mother, but there is no one who does not know their homeland. Anyone of us could have been born only at one moment, in one country, and only in one place. When we were young, we naively believed that our homeland would miss us more than we would miss it. Now we see that it is reversed. Wherever we are, whatever side we go, our homeland will follow us: as the name and surname, as a sign of the Zodiac, like mother’s voice during the breakfast; this reminds us that there is always someone who is older than us.
